Mary's journey so far!
Joseph is thinking about starting a business in Bethlehem, so when the little baby will be born in the family, they can stay for the first weeks at least. Mary askes Sapphira if she is able to come so maybe she can assist with the delivery. Mary is thinking about old prophecies. Like the one about Immanuël: ‘Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel, which translated is, God with us.’ There are more prophecies about a coming Messiah. Would the son of Mary and Joseph be the one? Sapphira promised she will come, together with her own little boy. Mary is happy about it.
Mary is happy. They decided to stay an extra day near the river Jordan. They meet all kinds of interesting people on the road. Mary is enthusiastic about a group of traders, trading nice fabrics and perfume. Joseph is very interested in the timber traders. There are also stargazers, magicians and wise men. She’s impressed by it. These men are able to read the stars. Like Abraham, they had to look up in the night sky to understand God’s message.
The journey is heavy for the pregnant Mary. Joseph is singing the songs he was used to singing when he was visiting the temple in Jerusalem with the religious festivals like Pesach. Mary hopes Joseph will decide to stay somewhere just an extra day so she can enjoy some rest since the donkey ride is not very comfortable for the pregnant lady.
Joseph came home with the message they had to go to Bethlehem. The Emperor wants to know how important he is and ordered everyone should be registered in his own town. Since Joseph and Mary are descendants of King David, they have to prepare for a journey that will take days. Because of the pregnancy, they decided to go as soon as possible. Packing everything is a challenge. It’s easy to take too much stuff with you!
Little John is born in the family of Elisabeth and Zechariah, the relatives of Mary. It’s an extraordinary story, because Zechariah wasn’t able to speak, until the birth of his son. Zechariah is a poet and wrote a beautiful song about his son. ‘You, my child, will be called a prophet of the Highest God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his road for him, to tell his people that they will be saved.’ Mary is taking time to process it all. There is so much to think about!
The marriage of Joseph and Mary is announced. They try to keep the party small. Sapphira is invited of course. Things are developing rapidly, but Mary is very thankful God helped in this by sending his angel to Joseph. She’s also busy with the first baby clothes for the baby that will be born. The wedding was beautiful, but also tiring for the pregnant Mary. The day after the celebration she’s unboxing all the gifts they received.
